Natey and Ellie Freedman opened New York Firefighter's Friend on Lafayette Street in 1991. For the next dozen years Natey was an undying advocate for NYC's First Responders, and supporter of related charities. When one of the firefighters from Ladder 20, with neck and ear burns, explained to Natey that Nomex Hoods were not provided by the FDNY, he ordered hoods for everyone in the station. He took great joy in having been asked to play Santa at the annual Ladder 20 Christmas Party for several years.
